Going Green

Posted by Amanda on May 29, 2008

More and more families are re-evaluating their homes and finding new ways to reduce their environmental impact. There are many ways–some of which are surprisingly inexpensive–to improve your home.

Whether you replace your bulbs or install new energy saving light fixtures, you can save electricity in every room in your house. Energy Star appliances are designed to use minimal energy are available in almost every possible model you can think of: dishwashers, refrigerators, washers and dryers and much more.

Conserving water is another important way for families to be conscious. Consider buying a rain water collection barrel.

Try to use organic and chemical free products for painting, staining, gardening and cleaning.

Ever since my mom went green she’s been driving us all crazy. We were already recycling and all that jazz but now she has us ALL being kind to the environment. I really don’t mind but that woman has really gone overboard with this one. She even started buying us eco-friendly clothes. And not from targets new eco-fashion line, but the clothes that look like potato sacks and old rags.

I’ll admit, one of the smartest things she’s done so far was switch to bioheat. I’m anemic so keeping out heater at a 68 or 70 just wasn’t doing it for me. Now we use every-day products like corn and avocado to heat up our home. It’s non-toxic and biodegradable, so mom is happy about that. I hadn’t even heard of bioheat until she had it installed. I looked it up online and found out some really interesting info. For example, if everyone using heating oil used a B5 blend, 400 million gallons of regular heating oil could be conserved. This would be a big step towards conserving oil, and reducing greenhouse gas.

When I started working for NORA I became a bit more interested in this stuff, but not as much as my mom. I got all of the info I just gave from:

Check it out and see what other info you can find.

Amanda, last year we had an Energy Star (more eco-friendly) rated air conditioning unit installed to replace our old AC (From the 90s). In a year we have had quite a bit of savings, and we also received a rebate from the power company which helped defray some of the expense.

Prior to the new AC, we replaced all the major kitchen appliances with better eco-friendly versions, and there too we realized long-term savings on our energy bills. Having these more energy efficient systems in place, specially now with such high fuel costs, has proven to us that eco-friendly appliances are an excellent investment for our personal finances as well as to the health of the planet.
