Buying Plants Online

Whether it’s a huge weeping willow tree or a small rosebush you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it online. You can find unique species not available at your local nursery, but the choices can be overwhelming. How do you choose the right plant online?
One of the first questions that comes to mind is how will my live plant survive shipping, possibly across country? Faster shipping options, such as FedEx are the norm. In extreme hot or cold seasons, 2-3 day shipping (in transit time) is the longest you should allow. Most nurseries ship “bareroot” meaning without soil, a moisture gel is used to provide moisture. This is typically only done in fall or spring planting seasons as the plant has to be planted as soon as it gets there. Keep in mind that shipping may be months away from when you order so mark your calendar so you are prepared for it’s arrival. Plants shipped in containers can be shipped any time.
When making comparisons, know the species name of the plant you’re looking for, and make sure you are comparing the same age/size of plant. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Make sure you know the necessary growing conditions, including planting zone, and care of your plant before you buy. Always ensure your plant is certified disease free.
Know the return/exchange policy. Make sure the nursery backs their product. Buying “used” from a third party (such as via ebay or craigslist) is not a good idea due to plant diseases and the lack of guarantee. It may be worthwhile to buy a small quantity to test the waters so to speak before investing in a bunch of plants.
