Are You at Risk for Indoor Pollution?
So much attention is paid to the earth’s environment and reducing pollution by individuals and corporations. Yet, many people fail to realize that they are subjecting themselves to high levels of pollution within their very own homes. It’s important to take a look at a few different factors that can create a healthier environment for you and your family:
1. Look for ways to reduce toxic cleaning products, and use natural alternatives instead. There are plenty of new all natural cleaning products on the market now, and several items that you may use as a substitute for commercial cleaning products in your own kitchen like vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice.
2. Make sure you have plenty of air circulating in your home, and proper ventilation. Ceiling fans can keep air moving through the room, and exhaust fans can carry toxic fumes and other chemical smells outside the house. Fans can also help reduce moisture that produces mold and mildew.
3. Make a No Smoking policy for inside your home. Cigarette smoke causes major damage, not just to the smoker, but to everyone around them. Also, make sure your fireplace and other fuel-burning appliances are installed properly and vented.
4. Test your home environment by either hiring a professional or buying a do-it-yourself kit to measure air pollution indoors. Radon, asbestos, molds, and other toxins can create health hazards that may permanently damage your lungs, cause birth defects, or other serious issues.
5. Finally, consider purchasing an indoor air purifier. These come in a variety of sizes to fit the needs of different homes and different rooms and have been proven to improve the condition of indoor air dramatically.
